2008 National Board of Review Awards winners announced

The motion picture awards season is officially open with the different award-giving organizations either handing out their annual honors and citations or getting ready to announce their nominees for the best in films for 2008. One of the first to hand out their prizes this year is the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, otherwise known as the NBR. Their choices for the best work in films every year are often a good gauge on who will get similar nods from the bigger, more prestigious and more coveted award-giving bodies in Hollywood.

The 2008 National Board of Review awards were recently announced and among the winners is the film "Slumdog Millionaire" by Danny Boyle - drama about a poor Indian boy who gets a
shot at winning millions in a television game show. It received the highest honor from the organization as Best Film of the Year as well as nods for its actor, Dev Patel who won Breakthrough Performance by an Actor. "Slumdog Millionaire" also received the Best Adapted Screenplay award. Other winners in this year's 2008 National Board of Review awards include Clint Eastwood for Best Actor, Anne Hathaway for Best Actress, Josh Brolin for Best Supporting Actor and Penelope Cruz for Best Supporting Actress.

With the Golden Globe nominations scheduled to be announced next week, will we see the same names in contention? How about for the biggest prize of them all, the Oscars? Let's just wait and see.

Postscript: BTW, Here are the important dates to remember in the 2009 Hollywood awards calendar: the 2009 Golden Globe nominations on December 11, the SAG nominations on December 18, the 2009 Golden Globe Awards on January 11, the 2009 Oscar nominations/Academy Award nominations on January 22, the SAG Awards winners/results on January 25 and the 2009 Oscar Awards on February 22, 2009. And while we're on the subject of awards, let's throw in the 2009 Grammy nominations announced last December 3 and 2009 Grammy Awards (winners and results) on February 8, 2009.
