I used the word 'historic' to describe this election because that's what it really is - the most important presidential election the United States has seen in recent years and the making of many 'firsts'. The 2008 election is the first time in US history that two sitting senators, Obama from Illinois and McCain from Arizona, will run against each other for the highest office in the country and the first time an African American is a presidential nominee of a major party, as well as the first time both major candidates were born outside the continental United States — Hawaii for Obama and the Panama Canal Zone for McCain. And since the Republican nominee for vice-president is a woman, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, the eventual winning ticket is very likely to be historic, as neither an African American nor a female has achieved either office. In addition, the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, would be the oldest first-term president, and the Democratic Party's nominee for vice president, Senator Joseph Biden from Delaware, would be the first Roman Catholic vice president.

The 2008 US presidential election also marks the first time since 1928 that neither an incumbent President nor an incumbent Vice President ran for their party's nomination in the presidential election, and the first time since 1952 that neither the incumbent President nor incumbent Vice President is a candidate in the general election. Whew. how's all that for historic? I'm sure there will be plenty more of these statistics once the election is over. The voter turnout might be the biggest in history judging from all the new voter registrations each party pushed for and that in itself will be something historic for this election.

The Republican nomination was no cake walk for John McCain either, for he started slow in the primaries only to finish strong in the end. After all that, we saw a presidential campaign marked by colorful personalities, unforgettable debates, interviews and TV appearances and accusations and counter accusations. But the real issues about the state of the nation topped every voter's concern in this presidential election, and two of them stood above all else - the war in Iraq and the economy.

It will be a several hours before we find out the verdict of the American people, who they feel is more deserving to lead them in the next four years. As we wait for the official presidential results, get a glimpse of how they fared in different states with the widget below.
