Now that 'Twilight' the movie is a box office success (as if we expected otherwise), the topic of any 'Twilight' discussion now shifts to the sequel. In fact, long before the movie was released, there was already fever-pitch talk among fans about 'Twilight 2' on the web, most specifically in the forums and in blogs dedicated to the vampire film. I don't blame them. The sweet smell of success was undeniable. For a movie yet to be released, the interest in its story, as well as its cast (Robert Pattinson in particular), could only be described as 'volcanic'. In fact, I read somewhere that it was comparable to the buzz generated by a Harry Potter movie, or even the 'Dark Knight' (many will contest this). Though it is still uncertain if box office revenues of 'Twilight' will reach the levels attained by these blockbusters, I think it is safe to assume that sales will, at the very least, surpass sequel prerequisites.
'New Moon', the second novel in the 'Twilight' series, is the best candidate for the sequel. But unlike its predecessor, which is a story of finding love, 'New Moon' is the opposite. It continues with the story of Bella, but this time without Edward (in Forks, that is) as he decides to leave town, temporarily, to protect his true love. 'New Moon' also brings werewolves into the story, something that may either add excitement for some or turn off others. Nevertheless, expect another interesting story when this Stephenie Meyer novel comes to life in film for it was a bestseller (a New York Times #1 for eleven straight weeks) when it was first published in 2006.
Summit Entertainment announced today that the studio is officially moving forward with the production of NEW MOON, the second installment of its filmed franchise TWILIGHT, the action-packed, modern day vampire love story. The movie will be based on the second novel in author Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series titled, "New Moon." The first movie in the TWILIGHT franchise, the self-titled TWILIGHT, arrived in theaters this weekend to sold-out showings.
I was surprised to find several blogs and web entries with 'Twilight 2 trailer' or 'New Moon trailer' in their headlines as I surfed the net earlier today. Fortunately, I had the common sense to avoid them because they are obviously bogus, out to dupe 'Twilight' fans eagerly looking for news about a sequel. How can a movie that hasn't even been written have a trailer out on the internet?! He he. The best way to have an idea of what the sequel would be is to read the book, or scour the web for its summary or a brief review. That's what I did. And, for the benefit of 'Twilight 2' fans out there, here is a brief plot summary courtesy of Wikipedia:
Isabella "Bella" Swan is thrown an eighteenth birthday party by Edward Cullen, the vampire she loves, and his vampire family. While unwrapping a gift, she receives a paper cut. Jasper, although attempting a non-human diet, is overwhelmed by the scent of blood and tries to attack Bella. In an attempt to keep Bella safe from the world of vampires, Edward leaves the town of Forks. Bella becomes depressed and seeks comfort with Jacob Black, an old family friend who eases her pain over losing Edward.
Bella and Jacob begin spending a lot of time together, and Bella soon discovers that the rush of adrenaline present when she places herself in dangerous situations stimulates a hallucination of Edward's voice. Bella begins seeking out dangerous behavior, such as motorcycle riding, to keep Edward's voice with her. Meanwhile, Jacob finds out that he is a werewolf. Initially, he tries to keep this secret from Bella, but he eventually reveals as much as he can without betraying his pack. After Bella attempts cliff-diving, she gets caught in a riptide and is rescued by Jacob.
At the same time, Alice Cullen, Edward's vampire sister who has visions of the future, has a vision of Bella jumping off the cliff. Presuming Bella is dead, Alice rushes to Forks to check on Charlie, Bella's father, while Edward calls Bella's home. Jacob answers and informs Edward that Charlie is "at the funeral", referring to that of a man in town who had a heart attack, but Edward draws the conclusion that he means Bella's funeral. Desperate after Bella's supposed death, Edward flees to Italy to see the Volturi, peace-keeping vampires who would be able to kill Edward, granting him leave of a world without Bella.
Bella and Alice rush to Italy to stop Edward, and save him before it is too late. Before they leave Italy, the Volturi tell them that Bella, a human who knows of the existence of vampires, must either be killed or changed into a vampire herself. After they return to Forks, Edward explains to Bella that he only left in order to protect her, and she forgives him. The book ends with the Cullens voting in favor of Bella being changed into a vampire, much to Edward's dismay.
Whether Summit Entertainment (Twilight producer) will admit it or not, 'New Moon' is almost a done deal. In fact, they may be writing the screenplay as we speak. this despite the less than encouraging reviews of the movie. But then again, sequels are not based on critics' reviews. Sequels are based on moolah, and the trend of the first three days of box office success undeniably points to 'Twilight 2: New Moon'. The only question right now is... when?
