After months of speculation, the new 2009 Star Trek XI (Star Trek 11) trailer has finally arrived online. And it looks much better than most of us expected, at least much better that those "leaks" and bootleg versions we have seen online. We finally get a glimpse of the 'new'
Enterprise, the redesigned bridge where some of the action takes place, Eric Bana as the bald evil villain Romulus Nero, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Commander James Tiberius Kirk.

The trailer opens with a red Corvette speeding down a deserted road. A few seconds later we realize that a someone, or something, is in hot pursuit with what sounds like a police siren blaring in the background. Another few seconds reveals a cliff. Braking desperately to no avail, the car plunges down the steep gorge. But not before its driver hurtles himself out of the car, sliding on the ground until he successfully manages to stop on the edge of the cliff. Just as he is standing up, a space cop get off his vehicle and announces his presence with a deep metallic voice, "What is your name?"

"I am James Tiberius Kirk," was the boy's defiant answer. At this very instant, we realize that this 2009 Star Trek XI movie is unlike the others. Not an update, not a new adventure but a full reboot. It starts from the very beginning, from the time Kirk and Spock were kids, from the construction of the Enterprise and on to its new voyage and adventures. The trailer continues with this line as were presented with a motorcycle riding young man in another deserted stretch of road. A voice over tells us everything we need to know about him: "You’ve always had a hard time finding a place in this world, haven’t you? Never knowing your true worth. You can settle for less, an ordinary life. But you feel like you were meant for something better. Something special." The motorcycle stops, and the face of Chris Pine as young James T. Kirk is revealed, as he watches the construction of the Enterprise.

I have never been more excited about a Star Trek movie that with this one. Don't get me wrong, I liked all the past Star Trek movies, all ten of them. I also watched Star Trek on TV from way, way back. But this one is different. It seems to have a fresher approach, a younger approach that will surely capture more viewers - kids and young adults born after the William Shatner editions. The trailer also reveals quite a few exciting scenes - fight and conflict between Spock and Kirk, romance on the Enterprise, sex (who's that on Kirk's bed?), etc. I'm sure there are plenty more of these in the movie, something that will surely add some spice to the usually staid Star Trek plots. Though many Star Trek fanatics (Trekkies) would have preferred another (continuing) adventure rather than a reboot, I think this was necessary to preserve the franchise and guarantee its longer life with the help of the younger market and the succeeding generations.
