True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. This quirky new TV series based on the novels by Charlaine Harris stars Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress who lives in a small town that just happens to be cohabited by both humans and vampires. She and her brother were raised by her grandmother after losing their parents in a flood and she tries to keep her telepathic ability a secret. Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in Bon Temps, the jury is still out. Sookie Stackhouse, on the other hand, is open-minded about the integration of vampires, as she finds comfort in their company since they have no brainwave activity for her to read and also probably because of her feelings for one charming undead fellow named Bill, played by Stephen Moyer.

Looking on this blossoming romance in various stages of curiosity, disgust or disapproval are Sookie's brother, Jason; headstrong, opinionated Tara, Sookie's childhood BFF; Sam Merlotte, Sookie's boss, who has a secret of his own, and her 'Gran', Adele Stackhouse, who couldn't be happier that Sookie is romantically involved with somebody, even if he is undead.

However you want to describe it, True Blood is not only unlike any vampire story that's been done before, it's not like any series that's on right now. That's probably one reason why it has clicked (it has reportedly been renewed for another season). And only Alan Ball, the creator of Six Feet Under and American Beauty (among others), would dare come out with a project like this.
