Welcome!

Beyonce gets new name ('Sasha Fierce'): how about you?

beyonce, beyonce new name, beyonce s new name, beyonce sasha fierce, i am...sasha fierce, new beyonce name, beyonce name change, I am sasha fierce, beyonce aka sasha fierce, who is sasha fierce, sasha fierce is beyonce, beyonce is sasha fierce, sasha fierce album, if I were a boy sasha fierce, if I were a boy video, beyonce if I were a boy, read my mind, monacomeHave you ever thought of changing your name? Replacing the one your parents gave you with something closer to your personality? These are the questions that entered my mind when I read this story about 'Sasha Fierce'.

Who is Sasha Fierce? Why, no other than Beyonce Knowles of course, the pop diva currently riding the crest of success with hit singles, best-selling albums, blockbuster concerts, a promising film career, product endorsements and a successful women's fashion line, among others (whew!). But why the new name, a second name? With all the success and fame the Beyonce 'brand' has been reaping, why change it? Why fix something that isn't broken? Well, it isn't actually a new identity. She just wanted to create an alter ego for better marketing purposes, I guess.

According to Yahoo Music, "The R&B singer has christened herself "Sasha Fierce" for her new double album, "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," due in U.S. stores on November 18, and has released a lengthy justification for the comical moniker."

"I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am," the former Destiny's Child front woman said in a statement.

"Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I'm working and when I'm on the stage."

Okay, I get it. I understand. Changing my name or creating an alter ego has crossed my mind too, many times. And don't you deny that the same thing never crossed yours. He he. Many of us, at one time or another, were never happy with the name we were given, or think that a better one is more appropriate with our appearance or personality. Many of us, if given the choice, would change our name to something else. A more modern name perhaps, or something more old-fashioned for the conservatives among us?

When we were still living abroad, in Hong Kong, I used to envy friends and classmates who chose their own names. They were born with Chinese names but could 'create' their own English names to go with it. A classmate whose Chinese name was Wong Kin Wah christened himself Stephen, so he officially became Stephen Wong (Kin Wah). Another classmate chose the name Daniel while another one was Angelo. Female students of my mom in another school were more frivolous. One named herself Coffee, another was named Strawberry and another one was Nectar! I know, they're not names you would actually give your kids but they seemed to be perfectly happy with it so I guess that's what counts.

In my case, I've often wondered what I would call myself. My given name is quite uncommon (I was named after a prince, after all). Moreover, my surname is Spanish (as with most Filipinos) and my given French name is quite inappropriate, I think. Besides, it sounds quite sissy to me. He he. How about Rafael or Carlos, or Rafael Carlo? I like that combination - a strong-sounding name. How about you, have you thought of a better name for yourself? What is it? Beyonce may have been happy with her choice of 'Sasha Fierce' for a second name, an alter ego. But will it be successful, will the public like it and identify with it? We'll just have to wait and see. BTW, her's a video of Beyonce's new single, 'If I Were a Boy'.
