At long last, justice has finally been served! That seems to be what every headline is shouting after OJ Simpson was found guilty on all twelve counts, including kidnapping, armed robbery and burglary, by a Las Vegas jury a few hours ago. He was taken into custody and thrown in jail, a sad end to the once sports superstar who was acquitted of his wife's murder thirteen years ago. Simpson and his co-accused, Clarence Stewart, face the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison for these convictions. Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass set sentencing for December 5.

The timing was ominous. It was thirteen years to the day after OJ Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in one of the most celebrated cases of the last century. This time, however, he wasn't as lucky as the jury of nine
men and three women reached its verdict after 13 hours of deliberations Friday. A verdict after 13 years and 13 hours? For the superstitious, that already spelled doom for OJ Simpson even before the decision was read.

The case stemmed from an incident in a Las Vegas hotel last year where prosecutors alleged that a group of men, led by Orenthal James 'OJ' Simpson, burst into a room, flashed a gun and threatened memorabilia dealers Bruce Fromong and Al Beardsley. On the other hand, OJ Simpson and his attorney have always insisted that the group was there merely to recover stolen OJ Simpson memorabilia. However, four of his co-defendants turned prosecution witnesses after plea deals.

Was justice really served? Was he really guilty of the crimes he was accused of? Or was this just a case of righting a wrong verdict thirteen years ago? It was quite obvious that Simpson's past haunted the case. Reports that Las Vegas police officers were heard in recordings chuckling over Simpson's misfortune and crowing that if Los Angeles couldn't "get" him, they would only strengthen this argument. Moreover, during jury selection, Simpson's lawyers expressed fears that people who believed he got away with murder might see this case as a chance to right a wrong. He may have been right.

Whatever it is, OJ Simpson still has several chances to reverse this verdict with appeals to higher courts. But for now, he will have to stay in jail until the verdict is overturned. Until then, don't drop the soap, OJ!
