For a campaign commercial video that aired simultaneously on almost all the major TV networks a few minutes ago, the internet search for Barack Obama's 30 minute prime time infomercial video is surprising. Search stats for the Obama half-hour TV ad has hit the roof. Did many people choose to watch 'Pushing Daisies' instead and preferred to watch the 30 minute infomercial later online, or did those who saw it already want to watch it again (and again)? Whatever their reasons, the 30 minute Barack Obama prime time TV infomercial is a huge hit, something that observers think will translate into more votes for the front running Democratic presidential candidate in less than a week from today. This is very timely, a wise move on Obama's part, because polls traditionally show narrowing gaps between voter preference towards the end of the campaign period and it's no different this year. From a double digit lead in the polls a few weeks back, polls are now showing single digit leads for Barack Obama over
Republican foe John McCain. This half hour prime time TV, otherwise known as the Obama infomercial, will help to turn back the trend and solidify that lead, if not deliver the killer blow to the McCain campaign.
Not since Ross Perot's own infomercial has any presidential candidate done this. Perot’s programs drew an average audience of 11.6 million viewers, or 4.6 percent of viewers nationwide, according to Nielsen. His one simulcast on ABC and CBS on Nov. 2, 1992, reportedly attracted 26 million viewers. Yet he still lost. Obama strategists hope his infomercials will deliver a different outcome for the Democratic hopeful. After all, Barack at this stage of the campaign is in a much better position than Ross Perot during his.Did Barack Obama irritate many television viewers for interrupting their regular television habits? Were baseball fans turned off because of the rescheduling of the World Series? Was spending between $3 million and $5 million to buy half-hour blocks of time at 8 p.m. tonight on NBC, CBS, FOX, Univision, BET, MSNBC and TV One for delivery of his final argument to the voters worth it? The answers to those questions will be revealed at the polls, a few days from now. Is it overkill? Obama strategists don't think so. This is, after all, a campaign scarred by its surprise loss in the New Hampshire primary after polls had shown double-digit leads. There is no room for complacency at this point of the race and the Obama camp thinks this 30 minute prime time TV campaign commercial will help seal a win at the polls.
