However, amid the frenzy of the launch, several other releases were mentioned including the release of the much-awaited 2.1 software (firmware) update for the iPhone, which, according to Steve Jobs, will be available for download today. But what will this iPhone 2.1 software update bring? There was no mention of it, except that it will be a "big update" and will "fix lots of bugs." Also left hanging was when exactly today will this iPhone 2.1 firmware be made available for download. Shades of the Google Chrome download again, when everybody was left waiting? He he.

Those troublesome bugs should be no surprise to current iPhone 3G owners as they've been widely reported and documented all over cyberspace since the handset launched two months ago. The forums are filled with testimonies and complaints from iPhone 3G owners. The upcoming 2.1 firmware update fix should specifically bring fewer dropped calls, battery life improvements, no crashes with applications and faster backups for these are the major issues with the iPhone which have proven to be the thorn on the side for many iPhone 3G owners. If the 2.1 firmware update can fix these, then it will be hailed as a success.

Last August 18, Apple released the 2.0.2 software update, which supposedly was to bring "improved communication with 3G networks". Then, two days later, rumors in the tech world circulated that another fix, for the crashing applications problem, would be available for download in a September software update. I'm guessing this is the one Steve Jobs was talking about.

The new iPod Touch has 2.1 software. If you have a first-generation Touch, you can get version 2.1: it's free upgrade from 2.0. If you haven't, it's $9.95 to update from 1.x. The updates are available today. If you have an iPhone, there's a 2.1 software update as well. It's a big update: it fixes lots of bugs: fewer call drops, significantly improved battery life, not as many crashes, backing up to iTunes is "dramatically faster." And some new performance enhancements as well. Free to all iPhone owners.

Expect the iPhone 2.1 software download to be available anytime soon, may sometime at noon California time just like the Google Chrome download.
