I remember this song well and have fond memories of it playing in the background at parties, while reviewing for an exam or in the car on the way to school. 'I Want a New Drug' is a song by Huey Lewis and the News, a very popular rock band in the 80's. It was released in 1984 as part of their album Sports which made it to the top of Billboards rankings in the same year. As the album's biggest hit, 'I Want a New Drug' was certified gold with sales of a million copies.
It was also the center of a law suit against artist Ray Parker Jr. who was accused of plagiarizing the song for his 1984 hit "Ghostbusters". Huey Lewis was approached by the producers of the movie to compose the theme for Ghostbuster but had to decline due to other commitments (the soundtrack of Back to the Future). Ray Parker was eventually hired to do the theme that sounded like 'I Want a New Drug'. (If you listen to both songs, the similarity in their melodies is unmistakable.) The case was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed sum. The song was also parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic as "I Want a New Duck" on his 1985 album, Dare to be Stupid.I Want a New Drug lyrics by Huey Lewis
I want a new drug
One that won't make me sick
One that won' make me crash my car
Or make me feel three feet thick
I want a new drug
One that won't hurt my head
One that won't make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red
One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
I want a new drug
One that won't spill
One that don't cost too much
Or come in a pill
I want a new drug
One that won't go away
One that won't keep me up all night
One that won't make me sleep all day
One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
I'm alone with you baby
I want a new drug
One that does what it should
One that won't make me feel too bad
One that won't make me feel too good
I want a new drug
One with no doubt
One that won't make me talk too much
Or make my face break out
One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
Here are two videos of 'I want a New Drug' by Huey Lewis, courtesy of YouTube (as always). The first one is the original music video of the song (take note of the color, or lack of it, and how slim Huey Lewis used to be) while the other one is a concert performance of the song.'I Want a New Drug' video by Huey Lewis
