US vice presidential contender Sarah Palin's woes seem to be never ending. In another prime example that nothing can be secure in cyberspace, the Republican candidate's 'personal' email account has been hacked. And the alleged perpetrator of this is none other than the internet activist group 'Anonymous', famed for its exposure of unethical behavior by the Scientology cult.

It wasn't immediately clear how hackers broke into Palin's Yahoo! account, but members affiliated with the group may have tricked the service into revealing her password knowing personal details about Palin that include her birth date and ZIP code. The hacker(s) also might have sent a forged e-mail to her account tricking her into revealing her own password. This has been the modus operandi of many hackers and scammers not only after our email but our PayPal, ebay and bank accounts as well.

Update: I found the following at The Huffington Post:

The hacker guessed that Alaska's governor had met her husband in high school, and knew Palin's date of birth and home Zip code. Using those details, the hacker tricked Yahoo Inc.'s service into assigning a new password, "popcorn," for Palin's e-mail account, according to a chronology of the crime published on the Web site where the hacking was first revealed.

Information and photos (screen caps) of Sarah Palin's email account were then forwarded to Wikileaks, a website that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, or religious documents (the alleged screen caps are posted below). And to further prove the authenticity of the hacked email, personal Palin family photos (above) were published as well.

Update: The hacker has now posted details on how he obtained the password to Palin's email account. He apparently used Yahoo's 'forgot my password' feature, which allows you to reset your password upon answering a secret security question. Palin's setup question asked where she met her husband, Todd. The hacker remembered that in her speech at the Republican National Convention Palin said they began dating two decades ago in high school in Wasilla. So he did some research and after being able to correctly answer the question, he was able to change the password and login with ease.
