Focus was the key element in this week's Amazing Race Asia 3 (TARA 3) episode for it played the key to a team's success. Overnight leaders Mai and Oliver lost the lead because they chose to spend the night resting rather than proceeding to the next clue to secure a sequence number for the next task. Other teams chose to trudge on, securing their place in the race that would
prove to be mentally, emotionally and physically taxing.
My predictions in my previous post proved both right and wrong this time. Henry and Bernie lived up to the top ranking in my books by maintaining their focus on the race, proving their physical fitness in the grueling sections and displaying a soft side in the charity segment of the leg. All of these factors help in maintaining their lead throughout and arriving first in the pit stop. And their prize for doing so was not bad either - one years supply of fuel from Caltex! Not bad considering the price of petrol these days! The teams of AD and Fuzzie and Niroo and Kapil whom I panned as the weakest of the teams last week proved me wrong by finishing second and third, respectively. Focus was the key in their performance as well.
Ida and Tania, who held the lead overnight in Vietnam, lost it immediately after waking up late and ending up fifth (or was it sixth) in the succeeding tasks. They must have taken more time to get ready being vain ladies as they are. He he. Sam and Vince from Hong Kong, after getting lost by choosing the wrong bus, still ended up in the top half of the placings due to luck, skill and the misfortunes of the other teams.
A disappointment this week was the team of Geoff and Tisha from the Philippines. Actually, it was only Geoff who disappointed me. Tisha still played it cool despite the hardships and wrong choices they made while Geoff showed a not-so-admirable side. He was too fresh for comfort in some portions of the leg and ended up displaying his arrogant side when the stress started to build up. Though many of us may have been in similar situations (some even in worse ones) when push came to shove, still the arrogant display was unacceptable. Later, he admitted he totally flipped in this leg. (Photo courtesy of supreme.ph)
The chicken-carrying (or boat rowing) task was the hardest I've seen in Amazing Race Asia yet. What made this project even doubly hard was the 48-hour-almost-no-sleep factor that left the racers physically drained. You could see that many of them were carrying the load on pure determination and guts. I wonder what next week's leg has in store for them, or us. When Allan Wu said in the pilot that this season's edition would be tough I think he really meant it. He he.
Results: Winners - Henry and Bernie, followed by the following: AD and Fuzzie, Vince and Sam, Niroo and Kapil, Geoff and Tisha, Ida and Tania, Pailin and Natalie, Mai and Oliver, and Isaac and William.
