Welcome!

when a house is no longer a home

Having lived almost my life in either a bungalow, flat or a split-level house, I can't help but dream big in as far as my dream home is concerned. In fact, I want nothing short of a mansion. Don't we all? However, when reality bites and I come to my senses, I realize that a two-storey would do just fine. I prefer it over bungalows and split-levels as it accords a little more privacy for the bedrooms. And, in a culture where family reunions are often an every week affair, keeping other people away from one's bedroom is important. My cousins must have felt the same way as all of them opted to buy or build such a house. I would definitely do the same,
I always told myself. However, I have lately realized the disadvantage of such a style.

Two widowed aunts live by themselves in their big houses unable to climb the stairs and use their bedroom because of poor health and old age. One was lucky enough to have a guest room on the first floor which she now uses. The other had to convert their dining room into sleeping quarters. Is this what’s going to happen to me when I get older, I asked myself when I visited one of them over the weekend. No, was my immediate reply to my own question. My aunts may have big houses, grand by some standards, and people would often look at them in awe. But all of it means nothing if you can’t truly live in them, when the house of your dreams has become a mere 'cell' that confines you. Somehow, the thought living in a bungalow or split-level for the rest of my life seems much better. Yup, a bungalow would do just fine.

One option for people in the same situation is to install stair lifts. I have seen quite a number of those on TV and in the movies. As a kid, I even thought they looked fun and probably pestered my parents to get one. There are a number of these contraptions available in the market today, with models perfectly designed to suit every individual’s preference and budget. And, to my surprise, I found out that these can be easily installed in just about 2-3 hours. Great huh? I wonder if any of my aunts have considered this option?
