I never believed my friend Anthony's text that Roderick Paulate, our very own 'Rick Astley of the Philippines', sang in the real Rick Astley's concert over the weekend. It's got to be a hoax, I thought. Until I saw the following video.Rick Astley with Roderick Paulate in Manila Concert
Rick Astley, 80's British pop star, delighted thousands of his Filipino fans with a concert over the weekend. But many were caught by surprise when he suddenly called local singer/actor/comedian Roderick Paulate on stage. Apparently, Gabe Mercado (actor/comedian) and a bunch of Rick's local fans made a Facebook group called 'I am watching Rick Astley and I want Roderick Paulate to be the Opening Act'. This was made in jest, of course, as Roderick has often been considered by many Pinoys as the local Rick Astley. He was also very popular in the 80's and 90's with several TV shows to his credit, and where he often performed many songs of, who else, Rick Astley.
Unbeknownst to the concert crowd at the Big Dome that evening, the producers found out about the Facebook group and contacted Roderick Paulate to do a live number with Rick Astley! Isn't that awesome? According to Gabe's blog, Roderick needed a lot of convincing before he agreed to do it. Even at the concert venue, he was still unsure if he was up it. And when he finally did, the concert crowd went nuts as Roderick sang (and danced) on stage.
I must commend Roderick Paulate for his guts! Even if I would be blessed with Rick Astley's looks (how I wish) and sounded like him, I wouldn't have the guts to go up that stage in front of all those people, much less sing and dance. But that's why Roderick is a successful singer/actor and I'm a luckless blogger writing about stories like this. He he. Too bad I missed the concert.
Moral of the story: Facebook dreams do come true!
