'pregnant man' Thomas Beatie's baby girl

Erstwhile 'pregnant man' Thomas Beatie is in the news again. But this time he's not the center of attention (or is he?). The first photos of his baby girl Susan Juliette, named after his mother, were published on Wednesday by People magazine, which paid an undisclosed sum for the rights to the first photos.

Thomas Beatie, who was the first legally transgender male to give birth, said he is very happy with his three-week baby girl and was quoted as saying, "Susan is a miracle! And we're finally the family we've been dreaming of."

As usual, there are varied reactions from many readers and bloggers. Many are in praise of the new father, Thomas Beatie, and charmed by his baby girl while there are others who have gone to the extent of calling him an exploitive father for making money out of this opportunity.
However, I tend to agree with joemygod when he wrote:

No word on whether he's giving the money to charity, but doesn't Beatie kind of deserve to keep it? Bidding on Angelina Jolie's baby pictures approached $20 million, and even D-listers Nicole Richie and Jamie-Lynn Spears managed to net reported seven-figure deals for photos of their offspring. And not one of those people went to the trouble of changing her gender, retaining her reproductive organs or waddling around as the world's only pregnant man! In fact, one wonders if Beatie couldn't have gotten a better deal. Sad! But only by the (also sad) metric of fameball skills. Beatie still looks like a very happy Dad, which is rumored to be worth quite a lot in and of itself.

As I looked at the father-daughter shot once again, a thought entered my mind. Is all this excitement over the photos because the baby, or is the shot of Thomas Beatie as a doting dad (mom? parent?) even more precious?

In a somewhat related development, Brad Pitt is threatening to sue anyone who publishes paparazzi photographs of his newborn twins taken at his French estate. His lawyers say photos of Brad and their ever-expanding family were taken "surreptitiously" using "highly powerful telephoto lenses" and sold to an unidentified buyer. The first photos of their twins are worth millions, with some estimates being as high as $15 million, so the Pitt and Jolie would certainly be more than a little upset if the photos were to premiere before their exclusive photoshoot. The couple has stated the money would go to charity, and are taking steps to ensure the exclusive photos aren't anticlimactic.

As for the rights to the exclusive first photos, there have been conflicting reports whether they've been sold yet, some believe negotiations are still ongoing while reports from France indicate that the rights have already been sold to a major publication for $11 million.

The baby photo business is booming these days, thanks to the Brangelina baby machine. No wonder celebrities are getting pregnant one after another!
