With the price of gasoline soaring to unimaginable (and 'unaffordable') levels in recent weeks, many have resorted to various means to save on the precious fluid, an idea alien to most of us a few months back. Now, there are articles and news features on this subject, giving useful gas saving tips to its readers. I am sure all of them are helpful. However, I have resorted to my own personal solutions to save on gas.

Walk
Walking to a destination was a means unknown to me before the gas crisis, and I am sure I have thousands (if not millions) of counterparts out there. I would drive to a destination no matter how near it was. I would drive to the bank which is two blocks away, the convenience store next to the bank, the drug store next to the convenience store or to church which is about 200 meters from the house. Using the car was very
convenient and quite inexpensive, especially if you have a monthly gas allowance from your job like I did. But those days are gone. Not only don't I have gas allowance anymore, I am jobless as well. Due to these unfortunate circumstances, I have learned to use the most basic form of travel known to man.
It was quite hard at first, especially in a country where sidewalks are either non-existent, blocked by parked vehicles or obstructed by vendors selling anything from newspapers to pirated DVDs. And the climate isn't that helpful as well. Either the sun is too hot to even venture out of the shade, raining like there's no tomorrow or too humid that you'll perspire buckets just by standing still. However, when you're faced with the possibility of poverty due to high gas expenses (thanks OPEC), one has to learn to swallow the bitter pill and sweat it out a little. As it turns out, walking is easy and fun. What's more, it's a much-needed exercise for my quite inactive lifestyle.

Remember the Bicycle?
Pedal power is probably the most practical means of transportation if you're trying to cut down on gas. But there's one problem. What do you do if it has been more than 10 years since you rode a bike? Many of us have abandoned this two-wheeled tool ever since we learned how to drive and left our dear old bicycles to rust in the far corner of the garage. But thanks to our good friends at OPEC (take a bow, you bast**ds), we now have the needed motivation to use it again. A word of warning though. Test if you still have your biking skills intact and don't go all-out at the first chance you'll get. Chances are you'll need some practice especially if your last bike ride was several years and many kilos ago!
Take Public Transportation
Yes, I have learned to ride the bus again and it's actually not that bad. I used to ride the bus to school when I was in college. I also rode the bus to work when when I was just starting a career many years ago. But it was easier then. The traffic wasn't as bad then, and the buses weren't as crowded. For shorter trips, jeeps and tricycles (a small cab attached to a motorcycle) are the answer especially if my destination is just within our subdivision. I have also tried the train (light rail transit) and it was actually great - fast and cool. However, no matter how much I have enjoyed my venture into public transportation, I harbor some apprehension every time rife the jeep or bus. No, it's not because of all the jostling and cramped space. It's not even due to the inconvenience of lining up at the stop or getting wet when it rains. I am actually quite wary of the muggers and pickpockets plying the streets. I have heard one too many news stories of such incidents not to be affected. Friends all it unfounded fears or paranoia, I call it reality. Still, I have no other choice if I want to cut down on my gasoline expenses. If I get mugged, at least I saved on gas! Ha ha ha.
Stay at Home
This to me is the best solution. Ever since gas prices started skyrocketing, we started to plan our trips and schedule errands. I think the key word here is discipline. We used to think nothing of going to mall at the spur of the moment or cruise around the neighborhood when bored at home. But now, thanks to OPEC (I never thought I would really mean that), many of us have become more disciplined and conscientious about something we always took for granted.
For many of you who haven't attempted doing these solutions, try it. You'll be surprised how much you'll save by doing so.
