First of all, the name is Jucelino Nobrega da Luz and not Juseleeno Nobulega DaRoose as quoted in some news reports. He is a self-proclaimed clairvoyant from Barzil who is said to hear a voice from next world telling him of prophecies for the past 38 years. He is reportedly the source of the so-called July 18 deadly earthquake prediction which has been circulating in e-mails and thousands of mobile text messages. Written in poor English, the letter claimed that da Luz had foretold correctly the death of Princess Diana, the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the powerful tsunami in Aceh, Indonesia, among other things. The Brazilian teacher has also allegedly predicted that a 9.1-magnitude earthquake would hit Nanning and Hainan in China on Sept. 13 and that the temperature in many African countries would peak to a scorching 58 degrees Celsius in 2010.

I received a copy of the said email four days ago from three separate friends and immediately dismissed them as hoaxes (I deleted them immediately but if you're looking for a copy I found
this on the web). I thought that was the end of it. However, several mobile text messages soon followed from other sources, in condensed form of course, warning its readers of the catastrophe that was to befall the nation on July 18. The apocalyptic message also warned all Filipinos to skip work and avoid going to high places and crowded malls on that day. Yeah, right! Thanks, but no thanks!

Earthquakes cannot be predicted, that much I am sure of. Though volcanologists can identify the areas that are most prone to earthquakes based on scientific data, a prediction as to when and where it will hit is next to impossible, more so the exact intensity of the tremor. This was what local volcanology and seismology officials immediately clarified amid concerns from gullible members of the population. Still, some couldn't be convinced. The maid of one of our neighbors left in a huff saying that she was going back to her family in the province to be with them when the quake hits.

Jucelino Nobrega da Luz and his predictions are not to be believed. Though he may have thousands, even millions, of believers around the world, I can say I am not one of them. The email and his supposed prediction is bogus, to say the least. There is still no science that can determine or predict an earthquake, its exact magnitude and date, and Pinoys should know better than this.
