After barely three hours of sleep, I was awakened by the persistent ringing of my mobile phone. I reached for it with eyes closed and pushed the OFF button. I didn't care who it was. I was determined to get a few more hours of shuteye after a night of beer and booze that ended at a little past four in the morning. A few minutes later, there was a knock on my door. "It's Jake on the phone. He says it's very important." WTF? Reluctantly, I answered the wireless. "Hey, man. What's your hangover cure? I have a splitting headache and I can't go back to sleep."

Is this what's so important, I asked myself. I thought it was a matter of life and death. "I know you have a sure-fire cure for this hangover, I just can't remember it," he added. Desperately trying to control my temper, I answered back, "Jake, what I have is for hangover prevention and not a hangover cure or remedy. I have no idea what to do with a
hangover precisely because I've never had one! However, I have read that tomato juice (yuck!) is effective. So is exercise, a hot shower and drinking plenty of fluids. You might also want to try Gatorade. Now, can you leave me in peace to continue my rudely-interrupted sleep? Bye." I turned the wireless off and went back to bed.
What I told Jake was true. I have no idea how to cure a hangover because I have never had one, never! Though I drink quite a lot when the occasion calls for it, which is usually always, my tried-and-tested hangover preventive measure has never failed me. I got it from Ron, another alcoholic like me, more than sixteen years ago. What is it? It's actually very simple. I take two paracetamols (Tempra, Tylenol, Biogesic) just before going to bed and wake up refreshed the next day, as if nothing happened. It's true. I used to go out regularly with friends even on workdays, drinking until two in the morning then going the office the next day feeling fresh and alert thanks to my sure-fire hangover kicker. I've told other friends about this and that's what Jake probably remembers. And I think I've also mentioned it here a few times.

Friends who have tried it swear by its effectiveness, even going to the extent of calling its discoverer (whoever it was) a hero for alcoholics like us! He he. And I'm sure you'll sing praises too after you've tried it. Just don't forget to take the pills before going to bed. Oh, here's another tip. Put the pills on your pillow (preferably somewhere in the middle and in a 'noisy' plastic bag) before going out so that you'll surely remember when you go to bed. That's what I do.
BTW, I checked on Jake right after lunch and he was drinking again. He said the tomato juice, shower and Gatorade weren't effective so he thought of curing his hangover with more alcohol. And it worked! He he. I would advice against it though. (Photo credits: blog.lib.umn.edu)
