DUI accidents have increased in recent years and is showing no sign of letting up. It is a common problem in almost every urban community. However, a new Italian law will certainly put a dent on this menace. Italy has begun confiscating the cars of people driving under the effect of drugs or alcohol in the latest attempt to lower one of western Europe's highest rates of road casualties. The new legislation states that any driver who tests positive for any illegal drug or has blood alcohol levels exceeding set limits can have their car confiscated, as well as toughening fines and jail sentences. The cars are to be auctioned off or used by the police, as is already the case for vehicles confiscated from the mafia and drug dealers.

Applause, applause. Why isn't every government implementing this? Arrests, prosecution, suspended licenses and even jail time seem to have little effect in discouraging people to drink and drive but this new law looks promising. There won't be any DUI if there is nothing to drive,

right? Now the only problem police may face is the lack of parking space for confiscated cars.

Road accidents are some of my most nagging fears, having survived two of them some years back. Though not DUI related, they gave me a whole new perspective in driving. My old speed demon days are gone, together with my late night alcohol (mis) adventures. Yup, I used to drink and drive too, and it embarrasses me to admit it. But I have mellowed, learned my lessons. My primary concern on the road now is safety (and saving gas). And in the back of my mind, I also fear being hit by another car, especially with a drunk driver at the wheel. No matter how careful you are on the road, others are not or they don't care at all. This is what haunts me, especially in our beloved but misgoverned country where DUI legislation and implementation is close to non-existent.
