pinoy Big Brother finale: triumph of the underdog

I am such a sucker for happy endings and last night's finale of the latest edition of local TV's Pinoy Big Brother (Teen edition) was no exception. Going into the final days of the competition, it was widely acknowledged that Robi Domingo, an eighteen year-old from a well-off family, was the front runner. In fact, many observers (this one included) thought he was invincible. And who can blame them? Robi vanquished all who were pitted against him (5 I think) through popular voting, eliminating them from the competition. Moreover, he was the top choice in various surveys in online message boards and, since voting required money, his friends and family had the resources to pull him through. With only four 'housemates' left for the finale, all that the country was waiting for was a formal announcement.

I like Robi. However, I was rooting for another housemate, Ejay Falcon. His story is inspiring. Abandoned by his French father as a child, Ejay grew up impoverished in the province, on an
island where there is scarcity of drinking water and electricity, and TV time means going to the community hall to watch it with the other island residents. He is understandably shy because of his rural upbringing but the young man is determined to free his family from the poverty that has wrecked his family. Although he found a father in Mang Erning, a farmer/fisherman who raised him as his own, poverty ruined his parents' marriage. It is with backdrop that he joined the TV competition. His main objective was to help his family financially and hopefully reunite them in the process.

When Robi's name was announced as the runner up last night, everybody was stunned, Ejay in particular. Nobody expected it. Nobody thought that this underdog could pull such an upset victory. But deep inside we knew what happened. It was a victory for the masa, the ordinary folk who found another symbol for their dreams and aspirations. They found another idol to identify with, to make them feel that dreams do come true.
