Who could have thought this was possible? Who could have predicted that the Lakers-Celtics basketball rivalry will be renewed at this year's final series? Sure, they were top-rated in their respective conferences, but no one expected such a dream finals. After all, San Antonio, Detroit and Cleveland were also formidable this season.
This will be a megahit of a series, to be watched with much eagerness and anticipation by the current generation of fans as well as their dads and uncles. Yup, the fans of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will be there cheering and shouting like they did some twenty years ago. For sure, we will hear that famous "BEAT L.A." cheer once again when they play in Boston, and witness a galaxy of stars from Hollywood when Los Angeles hosts the games. It's Hollywood versus the leprechauns once again!Lakers-Celtics 2008 NBA finals: what's really at stake
But this is more than a championship. This Lakers-Celtics finals is not just about the trophy. I understand the implications of this series and it’s not just an NBA finals anymore. The stage is bigger than that. It is a rivalry that is as old as basketball itself. A rivalry that may have started in 1959 when the Boston Celtics swept the then Minneapolis Lakers and continued through the sixties. These next games will be the biggest that any of the players have ever played in. Let that sink in for a while and know that this Lakers-Celtics finals series will have more at stake than anything for the past decade. It is not just about the 2008 NBA championship anymore, it is bragging rights to be the best NBA franchise in history.
The teams’ two match-ups this season don’t bode well for the Lakers, who lost both by wide margins. But things have changed since then, and now both teams are ready for an expected grueling series.
I have no doubt in my mind who will prevail. The crown will be going to Los Angeles where it truly belongs. Kobe Bryant will make sure of that. He has been unstoppable . The Spurs may have found the right defense for him in the early part of their series but we all know what happened after that. Kobe and his teammates will take the trophy home to LA where Magic, Kareem, Jerry West and Jack Nicholson (?) will be waiting with open arms. He he.
