Guitar Hero has swept the video game industry, more so in the US. Just Google the keywords Guitar Hero and you'll see the interest it has generated. However, the same can't be said for Guitar Hero in the Philippines. While there are also millions of gamers here, a majority of them are internet cafe/gaming center habitues (for economic reasons) who have yet to fully experience the thrill and adrenaline of strumming those electronic buttons and producing that awesome rock sound, and scoring too. But I feel that Guitar Hero in the Philippines is one the verge of becoming a blockbuster, with more and more of the middle class getting introduced to this awesome video game. Take it from me.

I was in another get together earlier today, at a friend's house a few kilometers from ours. Food was aplenty, and so were various stories from our younger days in college with a few gossip thrown it. But somehow the gathering was getting a drag, flat as an airless balloon. This party needs a little spark, I thought, and it came a few minutes later. Out came Gary with their new toy, a Guitar Hero guitar. "Guys, this is addicting," he announced. "I have been hooked since we
bought it for Kevin (his son) two weeks ago. In fact, Kevin has been complaining that he never gets to use his new toy because I'm always playing with it. Anyone care to try?" Wow, those are the magic words I've been wanting to hear since I saw it. Still, I didn't want to show my eagerness. No one answered. Then Gary turned to me and said, "Hey Mon, how 'bout you?" What? Did my eyes betray me? Or was I drooling without my knowledge? Nevertheless, my cover was blown. I was always good at faking disinterest in many things and situations but I guess I failed this time.

With Kevin intently watching, I fiddled and fumbled with my newfound toy. I stunk, and the score confirmed this. But what can you expect from a newbie? Still, I was determined to conquer Guitar Hero as I've done with other gadgets that I touched. He he. And more so after Kevin started teasing me that he played way better. Kevin is 8, and I'm sure you can understand what his comment did to my ego. I became a man on a mission, addicted, obsessed, possessed.

My perseverance paid off as I started to get the hang of it. My score greatly improved. However, much as I wanted to show off and gloat, my Guitar Hero nemesis was temporarily indisposed, asleep with his mouth open on the couch. Did my horrible performance bore him into a coma, or was I already that good to lull him to sleep (I wish)? He he. Only Kevin knows the answer to that. Meanwhile, the cute kid's muted snores were a sign that I should stop and give the Guitar Hero a well-deserved rest. Reluctantly, I laid down the guitar unit on the table and I told myself that I'd buy one of these soon. A new Guitar Hero addict was born!

Several hours later, I still couldn't get it out of my system. My hands were itching. Thoughts of that guitar in my hands, my fingers happily flicking its strum bar and the sweet sensation I felt as the 'notes' lighted up the screen filled my head. I'm definitely sick! For now, I have three options on how to snap out of this obsession. See a shrink, find a Guitar Hero exorcist or just buy the damn thing! What do you think?
