If you read my post about the 2008 NBA finals series more than a week ago, you know that I'm a Lakers fan. In fact, I boldly predicted that my Los Angeles Lakers would win the series and take the coveted 2008 NBA championship home to LA to the delight of Jack Nicholson! Ha ha. However, my prediction was off, way off. The Lakers were soundly beaten in the series and writing a post about the Boston's win is understandably quite difficult for me. But what can I say? It was a different Boston Celtics that I saw from game 1 of the series. They played more cohesively as a team, and they looked hungrier for a title. I was expecting the usual LA Lakers rout that they've shown throughout the season but it was not to be. And when the Lakers collapsed from a double digit lead almost throughout the game to lose in game 4, I felt that it was just a matter of time. Forgive me my fellow Lakers fans for
thinking that way, it must have been the pessimist in me kicking in again.
I actually started writing this post as I was watching game 5, resigned to the fact that Boston would win the series then. However, as we all know, the LA Lakers breathed new life to every Lakers fan's hope of a championship by winning that one, by a nose. Is it possible, I asked myself. Can my mighty Lakers come back from the grave and still win it all? I, as every Lakers fan around the world, had that in mind as we watched game 6 earlier. However, the Boston Celtics defense was relentless (to say the least), at one point forcing the Lakers into 11 turnovers and miss 18 of 26 shots in the first half.
It was an amazing LA-Boston finals series as expected, though I would have preferred a different ending. My congratulations to the Celtics and their millions of fans. You deserve it. As to my LA Lakers team, congratulations as well. Kobe Bryant and his team played their best and that's what is important. Though coming up short in their quest for an NBA championship this year, they did pretty well. There will be other chances to do better in the years to come.
One thing's gnawing at me though. Did I jinx the Lakers by boldly predicting a win? I don't usually do that in my posts. I often just make assessments of my favorite side's chances but very rarely do predict an outcome for I believe in jinxes (especially my own). He he. Would the result have been different had I written otherwise? I don't know. But the thought has been eating me up since game four. One thing's for sure though, I will refrain from predicting an outcome from now on. Or better yet, I will predict for my non-favorite to win! Ha ha, and hope that the jinx will work on them! Am I bad or what?! He he. Anyway, congratulations to all you Boston Celtics fans out there and see you next season.
