Everybody's going nuts about this and I am no exception. After days (weeks?) of sustained buzz, rumors and leaked photos, it is now official. Steve Jobs, sporting his trademark black turtleneck, has finally announced the launch of Apple's 3G iPhone to rousing applause from the WDC audience. I was actually up last night waiting for feeds of this announcement but my
sleepy eyes betrayed me. Had I been awake I would have clapped too. He he.
The new iPhone 3G flaunts the same 3.5-inch display (480 x 320 pixels) and has grown around 1mm in width, length and thickness. And, with 3G capabilities, it will allows faster data transfers than EDGE powered units. In fact, Steve Jobs brags that the new iPhone 3G is 36% faster than the Nokia N95 and Treo 750! Battery life is preserved at a nice level as well with the 3G iPhone rated at 300 hours of standby time. Talk time in the iPhone 2G is up to 10 hours (it's 8 hours with the first gen iPhone), while 3G talk time is 5 hours. The iPhone 2 will also be able to allow 5-6 hours of 3G browsing, 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback. That's a nice improvement especially since friends who are first gen users are always complaining about this feature. And yes it's finally official - the iPhone 3G will pack a built-in GPS under its belly. This would open the door to a myriad of location-based services and applications for gadget enthusiasts harping about this feature on other mobile phones.apple, iphone, apple iphone 3g, iphone 2, wwdc, apple iphone new, att iphone plan, att, att iphone plans, iphone, iphone 3g pricing, 3g iphone, apple, iphone, wwdc, 3g iphone news, iphone philippines, globe iphone, iphone, iphone specs, iphone spec, iphone size, iphone 3g
Having mentioned all that, it is interesting to note that the new iPhone is still not perfect, with some features still to be improved or lacking altogether. There is no secondary camera for making video calls and, unfortunately, the iPhone 3G has the same 2 megapixel camera as the previous model. No word on video recording, folks, so we guess it will be left out again. Other shortcomings are: there's still no memory card slot and there is no mention about any upgrade of the Bluetooth functionality. Oh, well, you can't have it all.
But the biggest news about this new iPhone (at least to cheapos like me) is the price cut! The price will be the same all over the world - $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version. The 16GB variety will also be offered in another color choice too - pearl white. That's almost half the price of the first generation unit! And with almost simultaneous launching globally, there wouldn't be any need to pester my cousins in the US for a unit. It's not clear if the Philippines is included in the list of first-batch issuers of the Apple 3G iPhone on July 11 but I am sure we'll have the unit locally before the end of the year as promised by Steve Jobs, with Globe Telecom as its carrier. Now that gives me more than enough time to save up. I wonder if the ZiPhone unlocker will work with this one?
