Oscar de la Hoya showed us why he is still the golden boy of boxing. In what can be considered as a mere tune-up for a much bigger fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. later in the year, de la Hoya overpowered Steve Forbes in front of a hometown crowd hungry to see their idol win.
Forbes was clearly over matched in this fight. The tale of the tape clearly shows this. Don’t get me wrong, he is a worthy contender. But with a former seven-time world champion as an opponent, the stats against him alone are formidable. Moreover, Oscar de la Hoya is hungry to prove that he still has the punch to bow out of an illustrious career as a winner.
I have been a fan of the Golden Boy for many years,
since winning the gold in the Barcelona Olympics. Though I cannot consider myself a real boxing aficionado, this was an exception. The combination of de la Hoya’s skill and charisma must have done it for me, and I’m sue the same is true for many of his millions of fans worldwide as well. He didn’t disappoint us today, battering the smaller Forbes around on his way to an easy 12-round decision win in his first fight in a year.
Some of my friends, however, were not impressed. They were expecting Oscar de la Hoya to at least hurt Forbes. He didn't, and that was what was so unimpressive about this win according to them. If de la Hoya expects to win his next match with Mayweather, he should do better than what he did to Steve Forbes they say. And I kinda agree. But that's some months away. Surely, the Golden Boy will be preparing hard for that, his last fight before retirement. (Image courtesy of http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/)
