The balikbayan box has been a Pinoy tradition for as long as I can remember. It usually contains food and clothes from Filipinos living in the United States and sent home to waiting relatives in the Philippines eager to partake in this regular gift giving. However, with the current economic crisis in the US, this tradition is likely to vanish, or at least hibernate until the economic crisis is over.
Thus, we were surprised to receive a balikbayan box from cousins in the USADVANCED preview of Black Friday SALE items online several months ago. It contained chocolates, canned food, toiletries and an assortment of clothes, shoes and accessories for everyone. “How could you send all of these things? You should have saved your money,” an aunt immediately texted. “Don’t worry, we bought them on sale,” was the prompt reply. Cheap? With prices soaring to record proportions, where could they have found such cheap items, especially the clothes? As if reading our mind, a text
message arrived from an uncle, “We got them on sale on Black Friday.”
After researching what Black Friday is, I understood. For us in this part of the world, black friday is an unknown. But for Americans it is the most awaited sale of the year, the day after Thanksgiving when every shopaholic wakes up early to stand in line at their favorite store as early as 4 AM. And why not? With items sold at almost giveaway prices, all the hassle is worth it.
But now people can purchase Black Friday items online without the hassle of having to stand in line at 4 AM. The Black Friday website offers shopaholics the advantage by giving them advanced previews of the items that will be on sale. No need to wait for your circulars in the Thanksgiving newspaper as you will be able to receive the 2008 thanksgiving specials when you subscribe to their email alerts! Moreover, the website provides direct links for each product so that shoppers can purchase them online. How’s that for convenience?
This site will surely be a big help this season.I wonder if my cousins know about black-friday.net? Hmm, I’d better tell them if I want to get another balikbayan box this year.
