With unprecedented sales of more than 7,000 tickets on the first day alone, the Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz title fight is one of the most anticipated match ups of the year. The Filipino champion, trying to become the first Asian fighter to win four world titles in four separate weight divisions, is set to challenge David Diaz for the WBC Lightweight title on June 28, 2008 in Las Vegas.

Both camps are predicting a knockout victory this early (don't they all). Experts, however, say it's too early to say or too close to call since Pacquiao and Diaz are pretty evenly matched. Moreover, each boxer has his own strengths (and weaknesses). Though Manny Pacquiao is acknowledged to be the quicker of the two, with a lot more skills and carrying a stronger punch, David Diaz has a reputation as an

unusual fighter – rugged, determined and, according to Bob Arum, “has a chin like iron and it’s impossible to win over him by knockout." Moreover, Diaz is an aggressive boxer who will surely not relish the thought of being another of Manny Pacquiao’s Mexican victims.

Manny Pacquiao vs David Diaz: fight to the finish

Though I am looking forward to Pacquiao-Diaz match like most Pinoy boxing fans, I entertain worries deep inside. For one thing, this is Manny’s second fight of year coming closely behind his grueling win against Juan Manuel Marquez in March. No matter how fit he may be, there are doubts in my mind if he has fully recovered from that one. Moreover, the Paqcquiao-Diaz fight is Manny’s first in a weight division where he is still untested and that is another cause for concern.

On a positive note, Manny Pacquiao has the heart of a champion and his latest win over Marquez is a testament to this. This, I think, is one of the biggest advantages he has over any opponent. Furthermore, the punch he packs behind those padded gloves will be decisive against David Diaz who is not known to be as strong in this department.

Like most Pinoys worldwide, I will be glued to the television watching this fight. But if the match won’t be broadcast live in the country like his previous fights, expect me to line up in any of the theaters offering pay per view, or at least Googling “Pacquiao Diaz result” endlessly on my PC.
