the new 7 wonders of nature

Though many have blogged about this in the past weeks, there is a renewed interest in the New 7 Wonders poll among Pinoys after one of the Philippine's entries was featured in the highly popular reality show Pinoy Big Brother. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was part of the setting for this program in its Survivor-style segment and, probably as part of the deal in letting the TV production shoot thereat, it is now being heavily promoted on primetime.

I first heard of this New Seven Wonders of Nature poll many weeks ago through a friend's blog. Back then, the other Philippine entries, namely Tubbataha Reef, the Chocolate Hills of Bohol and the Mayon Volcano, barely made it to the top 20. But surprise, surprise! Those three
now occupy the 4th, 6th and 11th positions on the poll along with the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park occupying 10th place! See what TV exposure together with the Pinoy's penchant for online voting can do?

I haven't been to any of these places but friends who have seen them up close attest to their unique natural beauty, especially the Chocolate Hills of Bohol province. It is a unique geographical formation made up of 1,268 (wow!) perfectly cone-shaped hills, spread over an area of roughly fifty square kilometers. No, they're not made of chocolate but are covered with green grass with turns brown during the dry season. Hence, the name Chocolate Hills.

I would love to visit all of them and all the other beautiful places in our country. But since they're located in the southern portions of the archipelago and I am still not over my "local air travel phobia", all I can do now is vote for them.

The New 7 Wonders of Nature poll runs until the end of the year (12/31/2008) after which the top 21 will be carried over for another round of voting. I have already voted for all four entries together with the Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls. Seven different entries are required for a vote to be valid. How 'bout you, which will you vote for?
