Manchester United has just won the European Champions League beating arch rival Chelsea in a penalty shootout, 6 to 5. This makes it a double championship for them this year after capturing the English Premier League title earlier this month also at the expense of Chelsea.
I almost forgot about this game. In fact, I totally missed it on TV. I am so preoccupied with the
excitement over the American Idol final results that I forgot all about it. It's a good thing I checked the Manchester United website earlier. The victory at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium is the second European Cup for coach Sir Alex Ferguson, whose tally of 22 titles since he took over at the club in 1986 tops all other managers in English soccer history. One more Champions League win would match the U.K.-record three that Bob Paisley collected at Liverpool, which has triumphed five times in the tournament.
Ferguson has won 10 English league titles and 5 F.A. Cups, both records for a coach. And the victory also eases what he has called his frustration in failing to match domestic success in European competition. He has earlier announced that he has no plans to end his 21 1/2- year spell in charge, citing a desire to wrest the title of England's most successful club from Liverpool.
To my favorite Red Devils, congratulations. You have proven once again that you are the leagues's best. And good luck on you quest for another record.
