US swimmer Michael Phelps won the first of his eight-gold-medal goal by topping the 400 individual medley finals in world record time.

American Tourist Killed in Beijing


An American tourist was killed while another one was injured after they were attacked by a knife-wielding Chinese man for no apparent reason in Beijing. The tourists, both relatives of a member of the US men's volleyball team, were not wearing anything that would have identified them as Americans or part of the U.S. team. The attacker immediately committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site. No further details have been released.

But before you ask if Angie and the twins will be rooting for him, listen to this. It's not Brad Pitt the megastar but Brad Pitt the Australian boxer. US Team Stripped of Gold Medals


The International Olympic Committee has stripped gold medals from the U.S. men's 1,600-meter relay team that competed at the 2000 Games in the aftermath of Antonio Pettigrew's admission that he was doping at the time. The IOC executive board disqualified the entire team, the fourth gold and sixth overall medal stripped from that U.S. track contingent in the past eight months for doping. READ MORE

2008 Beijing Olympics Medal Odds


As with any sports event, odds makers are making a killing. As it currently stands, odds makers favor China (4/5) and the United States (11/10) to win the most overall medals at the Summer Olympics. Russia was given 14/1 odds, while every other country is listed at 50/1. Odds makers also like China (2/5) and the United States (13/8) to win the most gold medals, with Russia the next favorite at 25/1. READ MORE
