Being Pinoy means loving music. We seem to have this natural knack of interpreting the melody and lyrics of any song, be it rock, classics, jazz, rhythm & blues, or our sentimental favorites, ballads. Proof of this are the countless Filipino performers scattered all over the globe singing their hearts out to the delight of audiences. Another proof of our penchant for song are the numerous karaoke machines in bars, hotels, restaurants and clubs, not to mention personal karaoke gadgets in almost every Pinoy household here and abroad. These gizmos have helped produce dozens of Ramieles, Arnel Pinedas and Charice Pempengcos. I may be next! (Dream on, Monaco!)
Like many of my countrymen, I am (was) a karaoke addict. Fortunate to have worked in hotels for almost 15 years, the karaoke was at my disposal after work. With the staff busily setting up bar for
the night’s activities, I sang my favorite pieces with gusto (to my staff’s agony, he he). I would line up songs like there’s no tomorrow and sing them all, together with some friends and colleagues who have likewise finished work. We’d usually end our “session” after a few hours, with vocal chords frayed and mouths parched but with big smiles on our faces.
It was no different elsewhere. Though I don’t usually sing at home (except in the shower) for fear of disturbing the neighbors, my car has been witness to many of my musical escapades. I would usually sing with whatever’s playing on the radio or my favorite CD. And, depending on my mood, I would sometimes even dance to the music while I wait of that darn light to turn green. Hmm, if my car could only talk, and complain. He he. With my windshield and windows heavily tinted, I did my craziest moves without any fear of being discovered by the outside world!
Friends sometimes tease me, calling me one of the world’s most frustrated performers because of my antics. I agree! But I have mellowed quite a bit in the past several months. Though I still sing to myself in the car at every chance I get, gone are my karaoke days. Blogging has taken over my free time. Besides, I think I have a better future in blogging than in the music industry. Let’s just say that my singing is more built on courage than talent, if you know what I mean. He he.
I was out with the boys again tonight, drinking and having fun on a Friday night. And yes, there was some singing too. Though I was more of a spectator than a performer earlier, I couldn’t help but recall my karaoke adventures in the past as I was driving home. And that is how this post came to be.
