It’s all over the internet, the latest scandal to hit Philippine society, high society that is. I saw this flashed in another blog days ago but was too preoccupied with something else to fully pay attention. The questionable Binibining Pilipinas 2008 results was still hot in the news and I picked it over this juicy scandal.
Australian Brian Gorrell has dropped a bombshell with his expose of alleged deceit and drug addiction in Manila’s high society, specifically the so-called Gucci gang. Allegedly, society pages staple DJ Montano duped him of several hundred thousand pesos (or was it millions?) by way of a restaurant business deal that he later uncovered as bogus. Moreover, according to Gorrell, some of DJ Montano’s family and friends have allegedly threatened him with deportation and physical harm when he started to expose this case. However, in a country jaded from bribery and
corruption scandals in the billions, this tale can only be described as trivial, insignificant to say the least. However, there’s more.
Gorrell, DJ Montano’s lover for several months, spills more beans with alleged accounts of rampant cocaine use in some of high society parties, bar haunts and inner circle gatherings. Most prominent in the tale is the name of Celine Lopez, socialite, party animal and lifestyle columnist in one of Manila’s major dailies. Hmm, who could have thought this was even remotely possible (provided that the allegations are true of course). Brian Gorrell is threatening to expose more personalities in the coming weeks, after he has left the country. And already, the blog he set up to for this purpose has seen a deluge of readers eager to lap up every sordid detail about this scandal. I can only drool in envy at his Sitemeter stats - more than 25,000 visitors a day in the last six days! Wow!
Why is this so fascinating, you may ask? We don't even know who these people are except what we read in the society pages. But that's exactly what makes this story tick, it provides a glimpse (no matter if it’s just allegations) behind the smiling faces we often see plastered in Manila’s society pages. Enviable carefree souls bedecked with the latest in designer fashion (super expensive, chic, European) costing in the thousands, things ordinary mortals (bloggers) like us will hardly earn despite slaving in paid posts for the next ten years!
Many of DJ and Celines’s friends have countered these allegations with their own denials and allegations, saying that Brian Gorrell is just a spurned lover out for revenge. But judging from the lack of buzz their counterpunch is getting, Brian Gorrell looks like he’s winning round one.
Update: I went back to the message boards trying to check for any new details about this expose but was surprised to find out that earlier posts were missing, prompting some to ask, "Are they (the Gucci Gang) that powerful to influence even owners and moderators of forums to delete threads about them?" Hmmm, your guess is as good as mine.
