Less than two days to go before the big rematch and everybody’s excited, most especially in our part of the globe where Manny Pacquaio is all but a national hero. There are streamers announcing the fight, banners of moral support and countless ads promoting specially set up pay-per-view venues for the multitude of pinoy fans without cable. Some people are going to make a killing out of a Pacquiao fight again! He he. But that’s not all, politicians are also getting into the action. A number of unscrupulous politicos have set up their own FREE-per-view venues for their constituents, all under the guise of charity and goodwill. Hmm, goodwill my foot! With the elections just about two years away, who are they fooling.
If the excitement over the upcoming fight has reached fever pitch here, the same is probably true in Mexico. Juan Manuel Marquez has brought much honor to his homeland throughout his career and I am certain he would give anything to vanquish Manny Pacquiao, conqueror of many Mexican
fighters (heroes) and presumably enemy number one in the land of Tequila. He he. Every Mexican is praying that Marquez will bring home Pacquiao’s head in a silver platter (figuratively, of course).
Manny is the obvious choice in this bout and I’m not only saying that because he is Pinoy. Even bettors in Las Vegas have reportedly picked him over Marquez. I can’t blame them. Based on his previous fights in the last three years, he seems unstoppable. Though some of his countrymen (this one included) had ealier entertained concern on the ill effects of fame, politics and celebrity on his focus and determination, Manny has repeatedly erased these with one win after another, silencing even his most fervent critics.
All factors point to a Pacquiao victory. But there is one thing I can’t get out of my mind, one factor that may decide the outcome of this bout – the law of averages. Manny Pacquiao has been winning for the past three years (?) and the law of averages may catch up with him sooner that expected.
I hope I’m wrong, I hope it’s just the pessimist in me talking again.
