Yes, Manny Pacquiao won, squeaking a victory over Juan Manuel Marquez by split decision. Now the Mexicans are really furious. I can’t blame them. I’d be mad as hell too if one man almost wipes out my country’s roster of boxing heroes! Anyway, back to the drawing board for them. Time to think, think, think, and think again of any way to beat the Pinoy boxing hero from General Santos City, Philippines.
I know many have blogged about the result of this fight already, but still allow me to post some of my thoughts and observations:
I must congratulate Ciara Sotto for a job well done. Her rendition of the national anthem may be the best yet. I must admit, I doubted if she could hack it when it was first announced that she would sing the anthem for this fight. But midway through her performance this morning, I was in awe.
His entrance from the locker room was another goose bump moment for me. With the capacity crowd of mostly Pinoys and Pacquiao (Paquiao, Paqiao, Pacqiao, Paquao) fans cheering him on, I was again teary eyed with pride at this sight, just like in his previous matches.
We were jumping for joy when Marquez was knocked down in the third round, thinking that it was over. Little did we know then that it would go the distance. This must be Manny Pacquiao’s hardest fought bout ever, with Marquez displaying gritty determination until the very end. Were it not for that knockdown, I think it could have gone either way.
Was it just me or did you also notice Manny in the process of congratulating Juan Manuel Marquez moments before he was proclaimed winner. I think he thought he was going to lose the fight. I swear I saw genuine surprise in his eyes the moment it was announced that he won.
Earlier tonight, the Marquez camp was quoted as saying they want an immediate rematch in June! What? Are they serious? Give yourselves time to recover guys, and us time to celebrate and gloat! He he. A rematch like that can’t be rushed, unless you want to end up defeated again!
My heartfelt congratulations to Manny Pacquiao (Paquiao, Paqiao, Pacqiao, Paquao) and his team, with special mention to coach Freddie Roach. You made us proud once again, uniting us even for just a couple of hours in the midst of all this political turmoil. Maraming salamat, Manny!
