What ever happened to the case of Cris Anthony Mendez?
I was browsing through my old posts this afternoon when I read the entry I wrote about Cris Mendez. If you’re asking yourself who he is, you’re either one of two things: you haven’t heard of him and his unfortunate death or you have forgotten like many Filipinos. I’d rather that you belong to the former than the latter group. Cris Anthony Mendez, to refresh your minds, was a University of the Philippines (UP) Public Administration graduating scholar who made the unfortunate decision to join a fraternity. Little did he know that that decision would lead to his untimely death, snuffing out his dreams of going into law school, helping
his family and sending his younger sibling to college.
The death of Cris Mendez through hazing (allegedly), in the hands of purported “brothers” he wished to join, was a national issue several months back. But now, all is but forgotten. I haven’t heard any report from network news about it, whereas the case was heavily covered several months back. Nothing in the newspapers as well. What happened to the investigation? What has happened to the Sigma Rho Fraternity members suspected of participating in the deadly hazing? What has happened to the Quezon City doctor (father of one of the suspects) who brought Cris’ lifeless body to the hospital? I tried to search the Philippines Daily Inquirer’s website for any new developments but all I found were old entries on the case, the latest of which was dated 22 November 2007.
Have we forgotten? Will Cris’ be another forgotten statistic?
