Welcome!

the good, the bad and the ugly

Tomorrow is the big day and I’m all set. It’s another season of the good, the bad and the ugly. No, it’s not the old cowboy movie with the same title I am talking about, nor a remake. It’s actually a television drama, comedy and musical all rolled into one. It’s the new season of American Idol! Our favorite guilty pleasure is back for a seventh season and the singing competition starts with the best part: auditions -- good, bad and very bad. The two-night, four-hour season premiere will, as always, be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, and the judging panel of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul will return to handpick the best of the best singers and weed out all those wannabes.

I have cleared my schedule for tomorrow’s premier as well as for the next episode the day after. I have even set my mobile phone to alert me twice during the day just to make sure that I won’t forget or make last minute changes to my day. Ha ha. Fanatic? Oh yes, I will readily admit to that. Guilty as charged! I have been hooked ever since season two but it’s the auditions that I always look forward to with much anticipation. This is where all the drama and laughter (mostly laughter) can be seen - all those weird hopefuls desperately trying to summon their talent (?) from within to impress the judges but always end up as comic relief and worse, being ridiculed by Simon the Cold-Hearted! Remember William Hung? I will never forget him. His name alone is enough to spark audience
interest but when he sang, omg, I thought the TV would burst laughing as well! He didn’t make it, of course, but he made a career out of his non-talent after that season. That reminds me, whatever happened to last year’s Sanjaya Malakar?

Another spectacle to look forward to are the misguided aspirants in weird costumes as if going to a Halloween party or something. Others, who are obviously only after television exposure, perform crazy antics that leave the judges speechless. And who can forget those bad tempered, trash talking rejects from last year?

However, more than the circus that the audition shows provide, I will be looking forward to the display of real talent from the elimination round to the finals. Though I’m still quite disappointed over Melinda Doolittle’s loss last year, as well as Chris Daughtry the year before, I’m optimistic that the producers and the voting public have learned their lesson and will choose a worthy idol this season. (There are reports that Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee, the winners two years ago, have been dropped by their record label Sony BMG due to dismal sales.)

Update: The wait is over! American Idol season 8 is here! Watch the 2009 American Idol 8 premiere, aka American Idol season 8 premiere 2009, and see the auditions for new talents this year.

The American Idol 8 premiere has been invaded by Katrina Darrell, the American Idol 8 bikini girl, also known as the 2009 American Idol bikini audition. And see Kara DioGuardi, the new judge, in action.
