Welcome!

home alone (on halloween)

.
mcaulay culkin I am certainly not, but with the traditional filipino practice of visiting cemeteries and loved ones’ graves on all saints’ day, I found myself alone in the house on halloween. the rest of the household had gone to the province for an overnight trip, to batangas in particular, where my grandparents and most other relatives are buried. I was left behind to tend the house, taong-bahay in jologs parlance. I had no intention of going with them anyway, the idea of traveling such distance just doesn’t appeal to me specially with the impending heavy traffic due to the long holiday stretch. with the fridge fully stocked, and the house to myself, I’d be free to do as I please. surf the net all day, watch dvds, sleep or maybe go out with friends. my favorite pastimes.

but my plans for some peaceful quality time for myself and by myself didn’t exactly turn out as I planned. first, my PC started playing tricks on me. it stopped every ten minutes or so, hanging whenever I opened a new tab or window. I couldn’t get anything done. I was planning to surf all day and visit other blogs for company but it was not to be. the funny thing is, this is the first time it happened. performance wise, this computer was doing well before halloween. was it something technical or am I getting spooked?

next choice for me was watching dvds, plan B. about 30 minutes into “1408” (yup, I was watching a stephen king suspense-horror movie on halloween), the power went out. that old meralco efficiency again, I thought. waited for thirty more minutes but the electricity was still absent. decided to sleep the rest of the afternoon, though it’s quite hot without any aircon or fan. I overslept. woke up almost dark and still no power. on my way to the living room to call up meralco’s customer service line, I noticed that the neighbors had lights on! what? this is getting creepy. I checked the breakers and there it was. it must have tripped earlier causing the power outage. an off-on maneuver on the breakers solved the problem.

were those technical glitches earlier just that or were they subtle (?) signals, I asked myself. signs from someone or something that I should have gone with the rest of the family and paid my respects? maybe. but one thing’s for sure, it scared me a little. I was on edge the rest of the night. I was praying that my on-again-off-again “third eye” (yes, I see ghosts. it runs in the family) wouldn’t rouse from dormancy that night. I later decided to turn in quite earlier than usual, and slept with the lights on, in the bedroom, the hallway, the living room, terrace and kitchen! ha ha. if my prudent parents find out that I wasted that much electricity, it would be an endless tongue-lashing for me.

the family arrived late the next day (yesterday). I didn’t say a word about the previous night’s adventure or else risk being teased no end by my brother. as for my “third eye”, it remained sleeping and inactive. whew! but I have so many stories to tell, sightings since childhood! but that deserves another post. maybe later.

(I should have posted this yesterday but something was still playing tricks on me. I was only able to use the PC late last night.)
