I was flipping through the channels yesterday morning when I chanced upon this CNN travel program (I forgot the tiltle) featuring the airbus A380’s maiden commercial flight. I was surprised because I didn’t know that the super-jumbo-double-decker plane was already available commercially. was it just last week that airbus flew in to manila and other asian cities to test the viability of the runways?
anyway, singapore airlines (SIA), the carrier that placed the first order with airbus, flew the jet from its home city to sydney, australia for the historic flight, and it was loaded with 455 passengers, some of whom paid tens of thousands of dollars for a seat in aviation history. SIA auctioned most of the seats on the inaugural flight on eBay, raising $1.26 million for charity. the highest bidder was british guy who bought two seats for $100,380 (wow! how much is that in pesos?). of course, they gave him the privilege to be the first passenger to board. with that price of a ticket, they should have let him fly the damn plane! ha ha ha. money really talks, doesn’t it?
but what really caught my attention was the luxurious interiors of the jumbo. that british guy bought two suite seats. yeah, you read it right. SUITE! each suite,
enclosed by sliding doors (how’s that for privacy?), is fitted with a leather upholstered seat, a table, a 23-inch flat screen television, laptop connections and a range of office software. a separate bed folds up into the wall. that’s not all. listen to this, two of the suites can be joined to provide double beds (see pic)! wow! and wow again! honeymooners (with lots of dough of course) won’t even have to wait to arrive at their destination. this plane gives the term “love shack” a new meaning. he he.
for the “less fortunate", on the upper deck, business class seats can turn into wide flat beds, while the economy class seats on both decks will enjoy more leg and knee room, the carrier says. business class passengers also have a bar area. wow again!
I’m sure well-heeled pinoys will be queueing up for seats on the A380, shelling out hard-earned or hard-stolen (in the case of corrupt officials) cash to ride in such comfort. I don’t blame them. if I was rich enough I’d do the same. I was green with envy watching the feature. some people just have the darn luck all the time.
